I just registered here and thought I would throw out a question about night digging. I have done a lot of night digs with my lantern and I am looking for a good headlight to dig easier in the surf. I dug a few weeks ago in the dark and the pouring down rain. I managed to dig 6 before my young son wanted to go in. I have been looking into bike lights some going up to 900 lumens. Any of you out there dig at night with a headlamp? Craig
Razor1, welcome to the Discussion Forum. We have had some discussion about headlight lamps. Jess’s opinion just about sums it up. I pasted his email to me after I sent him information about LED lights. .
Thanks for the info. I do not really like LED lights. They are relatively bright, but I feel they lack a strength of light for illuminating the beach when clamming. They tend to cast a bright bluish hue that is not as illuminating as the white light from a halogen/xenon bulb.
I need to locate the miner's lights you referred me to. I have looked at any construction/safety equipment vendors in the local Portland area.
I still need to talk to the local dive shop to inquire about my diving light. I do think the light creates enough heat that it drains the batteries unless it is immersed, or maybe I just had lousy batteries when I thought they were in great shape.
If all goes well with the weather and surf, I will be out again during the next sequence of tides over New Years.
Association member Jerry purchased an incandescent headlight from Builders Emporium after experiencing dissatisfaction with the LED headlight that he was wearing to dig razor clams. Let me know how you do in your search for a satisfactory head light. I use an LED headlight but I am not satisfied with it. Thanks Bill
Thanks Bill. I have used inexpensive led headlights and have found that it doesn't illuminate like I would like it to - especially when I am used to the light that a lantern puts out. I like to dig in the surf so a lantern doesn't really work out too well. I have been looking at mountain bike lights - one in particular puts out 900 lumens. Another puts out 1700 lumens but it is also $450. Craig.
